(24 Sep 2022) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Kyiv - 24 September 2022 1. Various of protest by Mariupol residents in central Kyiv 2. Various of protesters holding banners 3. Close of banner reading (Ukrainian) "Mariupol = Ukraine" 4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Vladyslav Kildishov, head of 'I am Mariupol' centre: "We gathered people from Mariupol to say 'no' to these fake referendums. The invaders, the occupants came to our city and they want to take from us, our Mariupol. They ruined the city, they killed thousands of people, and now they are doing some kind of profanation over there." 5. Various of people holding banners 6. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Nina Pavliuk, Mariupol resident: "We know that we will defend Mariupol in any case and we will come back. And those people (in Mariupol) who are crying and have sleepless nights… I received many calls today from the early morning, from people asking what they should do, how they should behave. They say they don't want (the referendum), but there is a danger of expression of will in quotation marks of the Mariupol residents. We believe that these situations will be figured out. And everything will be ok. The most important is not to lose here (pointing at her heart) the faith, the love toward Ukraine and the hope… I don't even want to say hope, but the confidence that we will come back to Mariupol." 7. Various of protest 8. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Larysa Vinohradova, Mariupol resident: "I want to say I have many friends left in Mariupol. And I want to say they don't stand for Russia. They want Mariupol to be a part of Ukraine and they are waiting for it. And there aren't any collaborators there." 9. Various of people holding banners STORYLINE: Up to 100 people from Mariupol gathered in Kyiv Saturday to protest against a Kremlin-organised referendum being held in their hometown over the possibility of Russian annexation. Covered in Ukrainian flags, with posters reading "Russia killed 100 thousand people of Mariupol" and "Mariupol is Ukraine," people who fled their city came to the square near the refugee centre "I am Mariupol." "We gathered people from Mariupol to say 'no' to these fake referendums. The invaders, the occupants came to our city and they want to take from us our Mariupol. They ruined the city, killed thousands of people, and now they are doing some kind of profanation over there," the head of 'I am Mariupol' centre Vladyslav Kildishov told the Associated Press. He added that with the support of the Mariupol City Council, the same demonstrations were organised in the cities that hosted many people who fled Mariupol, including Vinnytsia, Dnipro, and Lviv. A citizen of Mariupol, Larysa Vinohradova, left the city when Russia invaded Ukraine on the 24th of February, but many of her friends stayed because they had to take care of their older parents, who refused to flee. "And I want to say they don't stand for Russia. They want Mariupol to be a part of Ukraine, and they are waiting for it," she said, bursting into tears. Nina Pavliuk received many calls in the morning from her friends in Mariupol. According to Pavliuk, many of them were crying, not knowing what to do given the circumstances. They don't want to join Russia, but there is "a danger of expression of will," she said. Pointing at her heart Pavliuk then added: "The most important is not to lose here, the faith, the love toward Ukraine and the hope… I don't even want to say hope, but the confidence that we will come back to Mariupol".
