The words to “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus” were written by George Duffield Jr. in the 1800s. They were inspired by the dying words of his friend, preacher Dudley Tyng, who urged other believers to “stand up for Jesus” no matter the cost. Duffield turned that challenge into a hymn, and later it was set to the well-known tune many churches have sung for generations. As I thought about the new year, this hymn felt like more than just a song, it felt like a challenge. Not just to believe quietly, but to: stand firm in Christ when it would be easier to blend in stand up for what’s right when it’s unpopular stand in prayer and worship when life feels like a battle That’s why this version has more of a stomp / clap, country-rock energy, I wanted it to feel like a rally, a reminder that we’re not standing alone, but shoulder to shoulder with other believers and with Jesus Himself.
