The demolition crisis in Lagos has taken a dramatic turn following protests at the Lagos State House of Assembly in Alausa. Hundreds of residents and activists gathered to demand an end to forced evictions in the Makoko, Oko-Agbon, and Shogunro communities. Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) dispersed the crowd using tear gas, with reports alleging that live ammunition was also fired. At least 17 people were injured, including one protester who sustained a severe leg wound. Several activists, including Hassan “Soweto” Taiwo, were arrested and are currently facing trial. Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) accused security forces of deploying expired tear gas canisters, alleging that this may have caused unusually severe injuries. Protesters carried placards reading “Stop the Demolitions” and “Lagos is Not for the Rich Alone,” insisting that redevelopment must not come at the cost of displacement without compensation. In a major development, on February 3, 2026, the Lagos State House of Assembly ordered an immediate halt to ongoing demolitions in the affected communities. Lawmakers also convened a stakeholders’ meeting with community leaders and promised compensation for verified victims. However, the Lagos State Government maintains that the demolition exercises were necessary for public safety, urban renewal, and disaster prevention in high-risk areas. Officials have also announced a $10 million “Makoko Water City” redevelopment initiative aimed at transforming the waterfront community sustainably. Is this about safety and urban planning or social justice and forced displacement? The debate continues. 🔖 HASHTAGS #LagosDemolition #Makoko #LagosProtest #StopTheDemolitions #UrbanRenewal #HousingRights #MakokoWaterCity #RRS #PoliceResponse #HumanRightsNigeria #FemiFalana #SowetoTaiwo #ForcedEvictions #LagosAssembly #PublicSafety #UrbanDevelopment #LagosPolitics #NigeriaNews #CommunityRights #SocialJustice #DisplacementCrisis #WaterfrontCommunities #OkoAgbon #Shogunro #RedevelopmentDebate #RightToHousing #CivicProtest #Accountability #DemocracyInAction #NigeriaUpdates #BreakingNewsNigeria #UrbanPolicy #GovernanceMatters #CompensationNow #LagosStateGovernment #GrassrootsVoices #PoliticalTension #SecurityForces #HumanRightsWatch #CityPlanningNigeria
