On my recent trip to the Isle of Skye, I was fortunate to experience the most amazing weather. Although the full moon made astrophotography almost impossible, the beauty of this area is truly world-class, making it a real privilege to be there. Locations visited on and near the Isle of Skye included: Fairy Pools, Glen Brittle – located on the northern slopes of the Black Cuillin range. Elgol – a small, remote hamlet on the southwestern tip of the island, which looks out across Loch Scavaig to the jagged peaks of the Cuillin Mountains. From here, I took a walk to Cladach a' Ghlinne (also known as Cladach a’ Ghyline) beach, a secluded and rugged coastal spot nestled at the mouth of Glen Scaladal. Although stunningly beautiful, with views toward the Cuillin Mountains, I was appalled by the amount of human discardment—much of it clearly originating from the fishing industry. Old Man of Storr – one of the most iconic and photographed natural landmarks on the Isle of Skye, located on the Trotternish Ridge. This pinnacle stands around 50 meters (164 feet) tall, with panoramic views looking over the Sound of Raasay toward Applecross on the mainland beyond. Loch Sligachan – with sheep grazing along grassy tributaries on its shoreline. Trumpan, on the Waternish Peninsula in the northwest of the island – where I (unsuccessfully) chased the Northern Lights. Trumpan is known primarily for the haunting ruins of Trumpan Church and the Trumpan Massacre of 1578. According to history, members of the MacDonald clan from Uist arrived by boat and attacked the church, setting it on fire while a congregation of MacLeods worshipped inside. Most of the victims perished, but a single survivor raised the alarm, leading to a swift and brutal retaliation by the MacLeods, who ambushed the retreating MacDonalds and slaughtered them almost to the last man. At the end, I’ve included a selection of my photographs taken on the trip, which include the Corran Ferry (Fort William), Eilean Donan Castle, and Plockton.
