Steve Dayman, founder of the charity Meningitis UK, who lost his 14-month-old son Spencer to meningitis and septicaemia, says the vaccine has the potential to save thousands of lives. The disease is the most common and deadliest form of meningitis on the country, affecting an average of 1,870 people a year, many of them children -- and resulting in death for one in 10 sufferers. One in four sufferers are left with life changing after-effects, such as brain damage and limb loss, with children under five most at risk from the disease. It can sometimes kill babies and toddlers in under four hours. There are already vaccines against some forms of meningitis, including Hib, meningitis C and pneumococcal meningitis. The new jab, called Bexsero, has been licensed for use in babies from the age of two months and offers protection against the majority of meningitis B strains that occur in the UK. Meningitis UK's founder Steve Dayman, who lost his baby son to meningitis and septicaemia in 1982, said: "Meningitis is still one of the biggest killers of young children. This vaccine has the potential to save thousands of lives." "To me it's the biggest breakthrough since the polio vaccine was introduced in the late 1950s."
