The Minneapolis three piece du jour, Institutional Green, was the last band of 2025 to play in our studio. And I’d have to say their performance was a fitting end to this chaotic year, as well as a fitting end to our evening of audacious musical acts. Rolling just as much as they rock, mid-tempo is where these guys tend to find their home. Rich tone and sparse arrangements keeps them on point. What that point is is hard to discern. Rock, pop, and punk influences collide in a kaleidoscopic manner on every song. Kevin Henretta’s guitar nerd skills pay off big time shifting between country riffs, glam rock solos, Johnny Marr Rickenbacker jangles, and swirling psychedelic progressions. Topped off with a tinge of 90s pedal gloss and impeccable picking skills to seal the deal. Daniel Leary sings with a baritone that is both melodic and authoritative. Kinda live Elvis Costello without the feigned aggressions. His songs tells stories from a close perspective, coupled with the unique timber of his voice, the singer projects a folkie vibe as the band moves through different sonic landscapes. Adding to the subtle complexity, there’s a little bit of funk and soul in Daniel’s bass lines that is stylistically distinct from the guitar work. James Dankert blends the whole group together with an impressive shuffle that just makes you wanna smile. He plays exactly what the songs need but finds a way to add counter rhythms, Hi-hats, and tom fills that surprise and delight, making sure that songs take the best route possible over the hills and valleys of the Institutional Green set list. Finishing with a Pink Floyd encore, the band sent the audience rolling out into the unseasonably warm November night. Finishing off an evening of nostalgia in the making, and looking forward to next years we have together.
