Now that September is upon us, many are now looking for what their marathon race shoe is going to be. And I think a lot of you are going to be deciding between the Nike Vaporfly Next % (or 4%) and the Hoka Carbon X. And ultimately, there isn't a wrong choice. Both are fantastic options. But people will have strong opinions, one way or the other, because the shoes definitely approach the task differently. The Vaporfly Next % definitely lets you know it is there, and it pushes you along the way and across the finish line. The Carbon X works so seamlessly with your stride that it almost disappears. One is subtle. The other is not. But what they both do well is keep you protected from the grind of the first 20 miles of the marathon. And this is something that other marathon races don't do as well, such as the Adidas Adios 4. The other thing I'd like to address is whether "slow" runners can run in either of these. And I'd say the answer is yes. The benefits of these shoes will be apparent for many calibers of runner. Granted, there may be a diminishing return on the amount of money these cost over the cost of running a marathon with a training shoe. But I have tried running a marathon in a trainer (the 2017 Chicago Marathon in the Pegasus 34), and I felt like I needed something more. Ultimately, it's your money and they're your feet. Do what you want. Thanks for watching! Leave a comment to let me know you stopped by!
