A Guide to Coffee Types (1) From a strong morning shot to a sweet dessert drink, coffee comes in many popular forms. Here's a guide to some of the most common types you'll find in cafes. 1. Espresso /eˈspres.əʊ/ A concentrated shot of coffee made by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee beans. It’s the base for many other drinks. "I need a double espresso to wake up." 2. Americano /əˌmer.ɪˈkɑː.nəʊ/ An espresso diluted with hot water, creating a similar strength to black filter coffee but with a different flavor profile. "He ordered an Americano with a splash of milk." 3. Latte /ˈlɑː.teɪ/ (or Caffe Latte) A drink made with one shot of espresso and steamed milk, topped with a small layer of milk foam. "She has a vanilla latte every afternoon." 4. Cappuccino /ˌkæp.əˈtʃiː.nəʊ/ Equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and thick milk foam, often dusted with cocoa or cinnamon powder. "A classic cappuccino is the perfect balance of coffee and foam." 5. Mocha /ˈməʊ.kə/ Essentially a chocolate latte, made with espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate syrup or powder, often topped with whipped cream. "The mocha is like a dessert in a cup." 6. Macchiato /ˌmæk.iˈɑː.təʊ/ (or Espresso Macchiato) An espresso "stained" or "marked" with just a dollop of milk foam on top. "For a strong coffee with a touch of creaminess, I get a macchiato." 7. Flat White /ˌflæt ˈwaɪt/ Similar to a latte but with a higher ratio of coffee to milk, using microfoam (steamed milk with very fine, velvety bubbles) instead of a thick foam layer. "The flat white originated in Australia and New Zealand." 8. Cold Brew /ˈkəʊld ˌbruː/ Coffee made by steeping coarsely-ground beans in cold water for 12-24 hours. It's less acidic and smoother than iced coffee. "I make a big jar of cold brew to keep in the fridge all week." 9. Iced Coffee /ˌaɪst ˈkɒf.i/ Regular brewed coffee or espresso that is cooled and served over ice. It can be served black or with milk and sweetener. "On a hot day, nothing beats a refreshing iced coffee." 10. Black Coffee /ˌblæk ˈkɒf.i/ Any coffee served without milk or cream. This can be filter coffee, espresso, or Americano. "My dad drinks his black coffee with no sugar." 11. Filter Coffee /ˈfɪl.tə ˌkɒf.i/ (or Drip Coffee) Coffee made by pouring hot water over ground coffee beans in a filter. It’s a common way to brew coffee at home or in diners. "The office pot always has fresh filter coffee." 12. Affogato /ˌæf.əˈɡɑː.təʊ/ An Italian dessert where a scoop of vanilla ice cream or gelato is "drowned" with a shot of hot espresso. "For dessert, we shared an affogato." #english #englishvocabulary #englishwords #coffee #learnenglish
