The first timid victories in sports competitions were not enough to reassure the men of Piaggio, who had already understood the dangerousness of the competitors in the field, and in particular of the emerging MV Agusta. On 26 June 1947 the Experimental Department began work on the construction of the first two racing Vespas. The two machines, in addition to adopting an engine the same as those already used in the previous races, were distinguished by the strongly modified bodywork: for a more effective aerodynamics, the shield and platform were trimmed and rounded by the skilled tinsmiths of the department (Cesare Panicucci, Azeglio Masoni and Luciano Zocchi), coming from the previous employment in the aeronautical field. The two specimens were deprived of the lighting system and of the horn, while the copristerzo was modeled for a better penetration of the air. In addition, a rear leaf spring damping system was introduced. To complete the sporty aspect of the vehicle, a beautiful bright red paint helped. The sporting debut of the 98 Corsa - conducted by the test driver Natale Biasci - took place on 31 August 1947 at the Circuit of Viareggio. The circuit of the circuit, one kilometer long, started from the center of the town and extended along the seafront and was crossed by pilots of class 100 twenty times. To win was Biasci, followed by Aldo Del Carlo on Guzzi and test driver Piaggio Ferdinando Nesti on a seemingly standard Vespa, equipped with a racing engine. The 98 Corsa also competed at the Prato Fiera Cup, at the Furniture Show Cup and at the Lucchese Circuit, competitions organized with the support of local authorities, exploited to give greater prominence to the celebrations coinciding with the inauguration of Exhibitions and Fairs, in relaunch phase. At the Coppa Fiera di Prato on September 7th it was the first time that both built Vespa 98 racing models were competing at the same time. Piaggio, which sent its trusted test drivers as pilots, not yet sure of their chances of winning, in this first phase, prudently registered them as private runners and not as representatives of the manufacturer (an unnecessary precaution, given the great successes) obtained): Dino Mazzoncini, winner of the last three races, was thus entered in the name of the Lucchese Scuderia. The 98 Corsa was again victorious on 8 November at the uphill race Vermicino-Rocca di Papa and again at the Circuito di via Caracciolo, on the Naples seafront, on 28 December. His last race took place in June 1948 at the Circuito Terme di Caracalla, led by the dealer for Lazio Luigi Di Gennaro, beaten by the emerging pilot (and his employee) Giuseppe Cau, who already had the next Corsa type A.
