But over the years, the focus has shifted sharply towards minorities, particularly Muslims. From the Citizenship Amendment Act to the push for a Uniform Civil Code, the BJP continues to label these controversial moves as “reform measures.” Now, the latest in the list is the Waqf Amendment Act. While the government claims the bill is meant to curb corruption and ensure transparency, it has sparked outrage for provisions like allowing non-Muslims in Waqf Boards, handing survey powers to District Collectors, and limiting tribunal powers. Critics say this as a direct interference in the Islamic community’s religious autonomy. The bill was passed in both Houses after intense debate. Opposition parties including the DMK, TVK, and several Islamic organisations have moved the Supreme Court against it. On April 17, the Court granted an interim stay on key provisions, including the inclusion of non-Muslims and handling of land disputes. So why is the BJP so keen on this bill?
