The Tigers upped their defensive intensity and controlled the final 14 minutes to grab a 53-45 win in PHAC-Division III boys' basketball. Southern Columbia (13-4) allowed only five points over the next nine minutes after Blackwell’s basket, a stretch during which the Tigers scored 20 points of their own. Nate Gallagher, who scored a game-high 17 points, made a pair of buckets and drove and dished to Jake Gehret for two 3-pointers during the run. “I was getting in the lane all night; I knew I could penetrate,” Gallagher said. “In the second half, our defense made us up the intensity.” Gehret finished with 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers all off of assists from Gallagher. “We were finding Jake,” Gallagher said. “He hit some big shots. He’s a good knockdown shooter.” The Tigers also got a lift inside from Jace Malakoski. Malakoski had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. He scored on back-to-back putbacks to put the Tigers ahead 33-32 and then made another layup with an assist from Gehret on a pick-and-roll for a 42-37 lead. “Malakoski did a hell of a job of tonight,” Southern Columbia coach Mike Woytowich said. “He was on the offensive boards and made a couple post moves.” A pair of free throws by Braydon Griscavage put the Tigers ahead 44-37 early in the fourth quarter, and the Lancers didn’t get closer than four the rest of the way. “We came in at halftime and coach said we had to amp up our defense a little,” Gallagher said. “We played really hard defense in the third quarter and that got us back in the game.” Southern Columbia got off to a good start, leading 11-3 halfway through the first quarter. Loyalsock (12-7) got a fastbreak dunk from Saoj Jones, who scored a team-high 15 points, and Braydon Cioffi hit four first-half 3-pointers as the Lancers turned that early deficit on its head. “We started the first couple minutes nice, offensively and defensively,” Woytowich said. “Then we had a couple lapses, which were not what we scouted, not what we went over. (Cioffi) he got free and he made them all. That was a big blow.” The Lancers led by as many as eight in the first half, and the Tigers went into intermission down 28-24. “I think we took a good shot from them and did a pretty good job getting into halftime only down four,” Woytowich said. “It could have been a lot worse.” Southern seemed to be a different team in the second half, especially on the defensive end. “Coach definitely gave us a talk in the locker room,” Malakoski said. “They came out and they were hot,” Southern Columbia senior Ben Gehret said. “They were hitting some shots, had some big dunks. After we settled down, we realized we had to get up and pressure them. We were giving them too much space to do whatever they wanted to do. Once we got up and got on them, we made things a lot more difficult on them.” After giving up 16 first-quarter points — with 13 coming in the final 3:41 — the Tigers held Loyalsock to 17 points in the second half. One key defensively was Cioffi was held to just one point in the second half as Ben Gehret changed the way he was defending Cioffi. “In the first half, I was giving him way too much space,” Ben Gehret said. “I was letting him catch the ball, and I was going under these screens. ... I started to stay right on his hip, nudging him and making sure he couldn’t get around those screens cleanly.” If you like these videos, please support the channel by Liking, Subscribing and/or Clicking on the link and buying the channel a coffee.I thank you for your support. https://buymeacoffee.com/vidssca Contact Info: vidssca@gmail.com Courtesy of: Video-Hudl, Audio- Black Diamond Sports Press- The News Item
