Philosophical hermeneutics explains the process of interpretation of texts from the past but has also expanded to include art and other forms of understanding. But language about religion often operates beyond human limits of understanding. How does a better understanding of hermeneutics affect interreligious dialogue? J. R. Hustwit’s book Interreligious Hermeneutics and the Pursuit of Truth develops a fallibilist hermeneutical theory which allows itself to be criticized and revised to adapt to changing situations. In addition to engaging Gadamer, the father of philosophical hermeneutics, he responds to critiques from French philosophers Lyotard and Derrida. He concludes that a hermeneutics of interreligious dialogue is never complete.
