Shiva Temple of Anwa is one of the most beautiful Temples in Marathwada region. Anwa is a small village, 10km east of Golegaon on the main road to Ajanta, a total of 75 km. north-east of Ajanta. This village gained importance as it has a 12th century, Mahadeva/Shiva Temple. This consists of a sanctuary, an inner closed mandapa, and an open outer mandapa with porch projections on three sides. There are fifty pillars in mandapa,12 of which are the principal pillars, eight are slender ones flanking the entrances of the porches and antarala form within the mandapa. It seems that the Temple was dedicated to the Vaishnava deity. Almost all the figures on the faces of the pilasters of the jangha are of Vaishnava Goddesses. In two of the three main niches , however, are the images of Varaha and Gajalaxmi. The high basement displays deeply cut mouldings. The walls are divided into projections that rhythmically expand outwards. Niches with images of Vishnu are projected at the cardinal directions, with ascetic figures in the side recesses. The balconies of the open mandapa and porches are relieved by flat pilasters with stylised lotuses. The interior doorways are embellished with Vaishnava divinities in the company of Ganesha. Celestial dancers adore the columns, but the bracket features are mostly lost. Corbelled doors are created from concentric rings, of delicately worked petalled lobes. The Nandi and Linga are later insertions.
