Owner of Pope Leo's abandoned Chicago church envisions new future for building | ABS-CBN News

An abandoned church owned by Joe Hall in Chicago as part of a community programs project just got a fresh sense of significance on Thursday (May 8) when he realized this is where the newly elected Pope used to attend. For Hall, the church has always been hallowed ground. As a former Catholic school student, he understands the significance of Pope Leo XIV's election for the Chicago area. He said all the Chicago references on the news "went from cool to dope" as he and his students watched the announcement of Robert Prevost election. "Seeing the new pope from Chicago was incredibly nostalgic," Hall told Reuters. "The fact that Pope Leo XIV grew up in the Dolton area and attended Saint Mary's makes it even more special." Upon hearing the news, Hall was inundated with calls from friends and family, wanting to visit the church where Pope Leo XIV began his journey. The initial obstacles Hall had to overcome in acquiring the site three years ago are now seen by him as "blessing on top of blessing."
