This event took place at Cultuur Café Leidse Lente in Leiden on February 16, 2026 Manuel Cavieres : "Discovery of a hypervelocity star" Hypervelocity stars are the fastest objects in our galaxy, resulting from extreme encounters between stellar systems and the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. These extremely rare objects open a window into the internal region of our galaxy, which is typically hidden from us by dust. In this talk we will explore how we hunt for these unusual objects, and present the discovery of the second hypervelocity star ever detected.
