During an artillery strike, Khersonians gathered at a kids' theater premiere. The play was about a little girl who lost her home—and her favorite teddy bear—during the Nova Kakhovka dam flood. She and her mother flee to Poland, where bronze bear statues come to life to help her. The star of the show, Vira, knows all about it. Her grandma is still in the occupied area damaged by the flood. Vira and her friends have never been to a real school. First, there was COVID. Next came the war. During the occupation, Russians kidnapped children from schools, and many parents hid their kids. After the liberation, extreme attacks on Kherson made going to school impossible. When the city started to build an underground school, the Russians bombed it. Kherson kids study online under shelling and make it to the theater, hiding from drones. One of the little bears got under a cluster bomb attack the day of the dress rehearsal… but made it to the stage. The main character in the play lost her favorite toy during the flood. The actress playing her lost much more. The local theater redefines the very idea of invincible. It is the fifth or sixth premiere I have been reporting from.
