Phineas Gage is one of the most important subjects in neuroscience and medical history because he survived a severe brain injury in which an iron rod went through his skull. We still study and discuss him over a hundred years since his railroad construction accident. His injury was said to have caused a dramatic effect on his personality and behavior, showing the brain's ability to reorganize and adapt. Gage's case demonstrated that certain areas of the brain are responsible for specific functions. However, there are some misconceptions around Gage's condition post-injury that should be re-inspected. Of note, descriptions of his wild and impulsive behavior and inability to keep up with plans may have been overstated and exaggerated as a byproduct of time.
