CSC428 Research Project Okay, so my project is about accessible audio editing interfaces for people who are visually impaired. For context, Digital Audio Workstations, or DAWs, are powerful pieces of software for manipulating audio. These DAWs are not accessible for visually impaired users, since the workflow heavily relies on graphical user interfaces. Some solutions researchers have developed are a MIDI keyboard that can also interact with the GUI, a hand-gesture based audio mixing tool, and a tension based haptic feedback slider. Anne Marie Piper, who is a researcher suggests that audio is easier manipulated in “chunks”. Gesture based spatial editing is possible using computer vision. The user would stand upright and interact with edited audio chunks using their body. Another idea extends the MIDI keyboard to include more detailed haptic-feedback. This means the MIDI sequencer would interact with the GUI, and additionally include tension and depth related haptic-feedback to communicate waveform attributes such as amplitude. Hopefully in the future, DAWs will have a more accessible design.
