Chart of the New Coast of America,. and N.E. Coast of Asia. Explored by Capt. Cook and Capt. Clerke, in the Year 1778 and 1779. Issued London, 1784 for Universal Magazine . Scarce 18th century engraved Capt. Cook map charting the Northwest Coast of North America, present day Alaska and the Bering Strait (plus Asiatic Russia). Originally executed by Henry Roberts, this version published in the same year as the first appearance in England. Includes the three original leaves which accompanied the map, giving extensive background and descriptive text. In Good condition. Map displays typical offsetting often seen on 18th century British periodical maps, scattered minor spotting. Blank margins trimmed all around to just outside the neatlines, perhaps as issued. Original binding stitch holes run up both sides of the vertical crease through Alaska/ Bristol Bay, but these are so tiny it is easy to overlook them. Map has been affixed (long ago) at four corners to a backing sheet, the text leaves mounted below in such a manner they flap to allow reading both sides. An entirely acceptable example of this uncommon 18th century Capt. Cook voyage map. Map sheet measures c. 17 3/16" W x 9 15/16" H. Folio. Original fold lines as issued. Jolly, Maps in British Periodicals , UNIV- 199. Beddie, Bibliography of Capt. Cook , 332 (first English edition of 1784). Not in Kershaw, Early Maps of Canada. Not in Wagner, Cartography of the Northwest Coast of America. [vR18668]. Both the map and journal leaves mounted long ago to a larger paper backing sheet..
