Naraijuku is a very old town in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture. During the Edo period (1603-1867), it was the 34th post town on the Nakasendo, the road connecting Tokyo (then called "Edo") and Kyoto. Naraijuku was the highest of all the towns in Kiso and prospered as a destination for many travelers. Even today, traces of the old days remain, and the area is designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. It was also the setting for the TV program "Ohisama. Naraijuku is a place where one can experience the beautiful scenery and history of Japan, and is visited by many people. From Shinjuku Station, take the "Limited Express Azusa" or "Limited Express Super Azusa" on the Chuo Main Line, and change at Shiojiri Station to a local train bound for Nakatsugawa. Get off at Narai Station and walk about 50 meters to the left on the road in front of you to reach the entrance of Narai-juku.
