Jonathan Byrde unknowingly purchases a "defective" Tulavii starship, the Aethelgard, which contains a stowaway: Endara, a royal widow who sabotaged the vessel to die alongside it in mourning. When Grel mercenaries attack to reclaim the ship's valuable technology, Jonathan and Endara are forced into a desperate alliance. To escape, they utilize an emergency neural interface that temporarily merges their consciousness, revealing a profound emotional and physical compatibility. However, as a Widow-Class vessel, the ship continues to die without the sustained bioelectric resonance of a bonded couple. Risking a permanent, life-long connection, Jonathan and Endara choose to fully bond in the ship's resonance chamber to jumpstart the core. Ultimately, they save the Aethelgard and embark on a new life together as "the impossible ones".
