Trains, Trams & Buses at Shau Kei Wan 筲箕灣 - Hong Kong Transport [4K]

In this video we visit Shau Kei Wan, a station on the MTR’s Island Line in the neighbourhood of Shau Kei Wan on Hong Kong Island. Shau Kei Wan is a major transport interchange for the area that is served by train, tram & bus services. We start the video inside the MTR station where we see Island Line trains heading towards Chai Wan and Kennedy Town. Most of the trains we see are the M-Trains; the oldest rollingstock used on the MTR having first entered service when the first MTR line opened in 1979. On the opposite end of the spectrum we also see the Q-Trains which are the newest in the MTR fleet which will eventually replace the M-Trains. We then head outside the station at exit A3 where we find the Shau Kei Wan bus terminus. Shau Kei Wan is served by at least 19 bus routes operated by Citybus and Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). Both companies generally utilise a variety of different double-decker buses with different liveries, including Alexander Dennis Enviro 500’s or Volvo chassis. Shau Kei Wan station opened on the 31st May 1985 as part of the first phase of the Island Line. It was given a blue colour scheme and was constructed utilising cut & cover; giving it its island platform layout. This is different from many other Island Line stations which had to be constructed using deep-tube tunnelling. Around two blocks away from the station we find the Shau Kei Wan tram terminus on the Hong Kong tramways, which is served by a fleet of narrow-gauge double-decker trams. Shau Kei Wan is the eastern terminus of the tramway which consists of 30km of track across Hong Kong Island to Kennedy Town, plus a branch to Happy Valley. The trams are affectionately known as the ‘ding dings’ and first opened in 1904. The current terminus here isn’t the original; trams used to terminate at Chai Wan Road before being extended to its current location in 1929.
