By time of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, Scott had a reputation to call his own, proudly serving as an local musician. While still under Dumars' firm, the upcoming fair's grand opening provided Scott his opportunity to put his name out there. As a result, "On the Pike" was born. As referenced by both the title & cover art, "The Pike" was perhaps the most exciting district of the entire exposition. A mile long strip of seemingly endless entertainment from exotic dancers to carnival rides. (Though less advanced than the ones we are familiar with today!) Despite Scott's actual attendance left unconfirmed, "On the Pike" seems to capture the liveliness of the district within itself.
