"Fidelio" Moving Moment, featuring Russell Thomas

At the start of Act II in Beethoven’s opera “Fidelio,” a horrific secret is finally revealed. Locked in the depths of Don Pizarro’s forbidding detention center lies the activist Florestan, barely alive. In director Matthew Ozawa’s 21st-century adaptation of the opera, Florestan’s torture chamber is lined with video displays, flashing images and blaring sound to keep him awake at all hours. The relentless torture and isolation has nearly broken his spirit. In the aria “In des Lebens Frühlingstagen,” he meditates on the dark circumstances he finds himself in — the punishment for speaking out against a tyrant. “In des Lebens Frühlingstagen ist das Glück von mir geflohn! Wahrheit wagt ich kühn zu sagen, und die Ketten sind mein Lohn,” Florestan sings mournfully. “In the spring days of my life, happiness has fled from me. I boldly dared to tell the truth — and these chains are my reward.” But a vision of hope is about to visit him.
