How To Advocate For Yourself at Work: Autism & ADHD Accommodation Tips

How to Ask for Workplace Adjustments #autismatwork #adhdtips #equalityact Hi Everyone and Welcome to One Autistic Person Channel Are your workplace adjustments truly reasonable? As someone navigating the workplace with autism or ADHD, I understand how challenging it can be to request and secure meaningful accommodations. In this video, I share practical strategies to frame your requests effectively, ensuring they are both reasonable and actionable. We’ll explore examples like time blindness, transitions, and handling interruptions, with rephrased approaches that can improve understanding and increase acceptance. My goal is to empower you with tips that help you advocate for your needs while fostering collaboration with your employer. This video has you covered from personal insights to UK-specific guidelines under the Equality Act 2010. Below are some resources: ACAS: https://www.acas.org.uk/reasonable-ad... Government website: https://www.gov.uk/reasonable-adjustm... Equality Act 2010 definition of disability: https://www.gov.uk/definition-of-disa... These are the suggestions used in the video for reference: Time Blindness Incorrect: ‘I have time blindness; this can mean I am late for work or back from breaks. Will this be an issue?’ The answer is yes. Potential rephrasing: ‘ I do have ADHD, which can mean I struggle with time due to a phenomenon called time blindness. I put a lot of work in to ensure this has as little impact on my working life as possible, but it does, sometimes, mean that I will lose track of time, and it can mean I arrive late, even when I have given myself a considerable amount of time to get to work or put measures in place to ensure I am back at work after my break at times. Due to the measures I have put in place, this is a rare occasion, but I want to inform you that this may happen occasionally, and I will always be willing to work that time back. Being late will not affect my work in any other way, and I will always do all I can to ensure that I am in work earlier than I am required to be.’ Transitions: Incorrect: ‘I have issues with transitions, so need more time when working on multiple tasks’ – this is ambiguous. Potential rephrasing: ‘Having autism does mean that I can struggle to transition between tasks; this may mean that I need a 5-10 minute water/toilet/rest break between switching tasks. This will mean that I will be more productive as I can give each task the focus it deserves. This often means each task will be completed quicker than expected if I do not have the break. I can become overwhelmed, and I may not be able to carry out the new task or not complete it in time or to the required standard. Sometimes, I can transition between tasks seamlessly, and wherever possible, I plan my day to ensure I am as ready for daily transitions as possible. However, it would be helpful for this to be considered during my working day.’ Being interrupted: Incorrect: ‘If I am interrupted, I struggle to carry on with my work so I need to work alone, uninterrupted.’ Potential rephrasing: ‘Interruptions can be problematic for me and make it difficult to re-focus on the work I was doing. Wherever possible, it would be helpful for people to schedule a discussion with me, even if it is small. I am happy to keep my schedule up to date with free time each day to ensure that I can discuss anything needed in a planned way. It could also be helpful if someone would like to ask something of me, such as if this is sent by email, so I can respond after reading the required outcome. I do understand this is not always possible, and emergencies are happy. This request is about general requests that would not be classed as emergencies. Talking on the phone Incorrect: ‘I really struggle with talking on the phone and I would prefer if I didn’t have to do this as it dysregulates me.’ I am happy for me to send this outline and will always be open to the other party to add to it if I have missed something off. 🔔𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬.    / @oneautisticperson   🔗 Stay Connected With Me.
