Turkish border guards fired shots into the air on Tuesday to repel Kurdish demonstrators near the city of Qamishli, as crowds attempted to force access through a border crossing linking Syria and Turkey. Footage shows hundreds of demonstrators waving Kurdish flags and surging towards the crossing. Turkish security forces can be seen firing into the air and deploying water cannons in an effort to disperse the crowd. Riots later erupted along the Turkish–Syrian border in the Nusaybin–Qamishli border area, according to media reports. Hundreds of protesters flooded the streets of the border town and moved towards the crossing, before clashing with police who used tear gas and water cannons to push them back. Media outlets reported casualties among demonstrators, though details remain unclear. Turkish authorities had not commented on the reported injuries at the time of publication. The protests come amid escalating tensions in northeastern Syria, where clashes continue in the countryside of Hasakah. Government forces have taken control of several villages and towns, including the al-Hol camp, which houses members and families of the Islamic State (ISIS). Authorities later announced they were prepared to assume control of the camp and nearby prisons. Syria’s transitional government said on Tuesday that it had reached a mutual understanding with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), setting a four-day period to address details of the mechanism for integration. It added that if an agreement is reached, government forces will halt their advance into the city centres of Hasakah and Qamishli. For its part, the SDF said its forces are “fully committed to the ceasefire with the Damascus government,” reiterating that it “will not launch any military action unless our forces are exposed to any attacks in the future.” #turkish #kurdish #turkishvskurdish #qamishliborder #alertnews Welcome to Alert — Your Fastest Window to the World.
