Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, Fall 2014 Kayak Camping Trip in Umbagog Lake State Park, NH. We saw nesting bald eagles, listened to loon calls every day, and flushed ducks and geese as we paddled. Clear blue skies moved in at the end of the second day and gave us the most wonderful light. (The last 2/3 of the video is far prettier than the first part.!) We stayed at remote site #29, which is only reachable by boat. For those doing reconnaissance for a future trip, I've included a couple of short clips on remote sites #28 and #34 as well. (I found it hard to find pictures or videos of all of the remote sites on-line.) If you go, reservations are required, and be sure to select the "remote" sites from Reserve America (all of which are only accessible by boat), otherwise you'll get a site in the small, car-camping campground at the south end of the lake. Firewood is regulated on this lake, but the price is fair ($20 for 5 bundles) so do buy it from the State Park Headquarters at check-in to avoid bringing in non-native insects. Wind on this lake, which runs North-South, can be REALLY strong, so think carefully about your safety gear, boat selection, and physical conditioning, and watch the weather. Learn and practice kayak self-rescue techniques! In this video, you will see that I was wearing a dry top and dry pants with wetsuit gloves and wetsuit booties, but the other guys just had dry tops and 1/2 gloves and were often cold. We all probably should have worn full dry suits for this time of year. Please dress for immersion in cooler fall weather, as hypothermia can happen in minutes in these temperatures. (We carried a full wet suit on board in case one of us dumped and needed to recover body warmth.) We checked out almost every remote site on this lake, and they all were perfectly cared for and stunningly beautiful. What a great jewel as the State of New Hampshire's newest state park!
