Join the explorer girl on a journey through the jungle, river, mountains, ocean, arctic and the city of London encountering different animals on the way. This version of the classic song 'Walking Through the Jungle' follows a girl exploring environments and meeting animals before returning home. Once indoors it is revealed that she is playing with her stuffed animal toys and has been in her garden imagining a trip around the world. Origin This is a traditional British song first published in 1969 in “This Little Puffin” compiled by Elizabeth Matterson who sourced the song from shared oral folk traditional rhymes used in nursery schools and playgroups across Britain. The first published lyrics were: Walking through the jungle, What did I see? A big lion roaring, At me, me, me! (then baby monkey laughing and slippery snake hissing). Walking Through the Jungle is a variation of “Going On A Bear Hunt / Lion Hunt” which shares a similar pattern and call and response structure. “Going on a lion hunt, got my binoculars/ma gun by my side”. Bear/Lion hunt and Walking Through The Jungle originated and spread through British scout camps and USA summer camps in the 1950’s. Jungle songs became more popular in the 1960’s because of the Jungle Book. In 1916 Robert Baden-Powell published the wolf cub’s handbook, basing the young scout’s framework on “The Jungle Book” by Rudyard Kipling. In 1966 the wolf cubs were renamed the “Cub Scouts” then in 1967 (1968 in the UK) Disney’s “The Jungle Book” animated feature film was released making jungle lore even more popular as a framework in education. The little woolly vision version features an explorer with a jacket inspired by the iconic outfits of British naturalist Sir David Attenborough. Look out for his picture on the wall of the explorers house at the end. Lyrics: Walking through the jungle (walking through the jungle) What will we see? (what will we see?)
