Ending RHD in Australia - Take Heart. http://takeheart.tv It's really important to make sure that we have the right workforce in the right place. For children, we need this very chronic treatment for rheumatic heart disease. It would be ideal to have school nurses like now we have in Maningrida to be able to deliver the treatment for kids that they need at school. Well, there was a lot of education with Lara at the school. They learnt all in their own language even people that were quite well educated when they learnt in their own language about it, they said they didn't realize it was so bad. They did good support to us and how we are understanding work together and understand where the heart diseases came through and we need to go and share with other communities across the Arnhem Land and they can find out where the germs came in or how diseases came in from. So we can like training or something to work together to support the communities. What we're hoping to show is that they can find it just as well as the experts can. But all the kids here are getting an echo from one of the guys using the handheld machine that we've trained in the last four or five weeks as well as getting an echo from an expert. And so every kid in this community, every single kid that we can bring in, is getting screened, and what that enables us to do is to find some kids from here in Maningrida who've got rheumatic heart disease. And, importantly, to find it while it's mild, to find it before they get to the point of being severe, before they get to the point of heart failure, before they need a heart operation, so that we can get them on penicillin. We've got these mobile echo screenings that, that's where the four local aboriginal people were trained up on, so that's a key component with the echo screening. The second thing that's critical is we really need that education piece and we really need the awareness piece with that, and then the third is the health workers that go along with that. And then the last piece is the social deterrents in ensuring healthy homes. So, it all fits together, but each of them are really important. They're actions that can be done now. The number one ask is to get the Australian government to commit to ending rheumatic heart disease in Australia, and starting and focusing on the highest risk communities. So, focusing on the 25 highest risk communities across Australia which will be the northern part of Queensland, Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia, and putting in resources in relation to education, active case-finding, housing and hygiene. We have been waiting for a long time and watching young people die and have open heart surgery. Our country can no longer tolerate children having their chest cut open for a preventable illness. Action must start today and we must start with addressing problems in highest risk communities.
