#korea #buddhism #koreanhistory #koreanculture #historyofkorea (episode 52) In this video, I will be looking at some of the different symbols, patterns, figures and decorations you may find in a Korean temple as well as their significance and meaning. I’m by no means an expert on Buddhism but I’ll try my best to explain the themes and their interpretations. I will begin by exploring the Four Heavenly Kings (사천왕), who they are and their significance. Then, I’ll talk about the lotus flower’s (연) importance in Buddhism. Next, I will take a look at the dragon (용) and how it is used in temples. Next, I’ll explore the use of the turtle (거북) in Korean temples. I’ll follow this with an explanation of the swastika (만자문) in Buddhism. This symbol understandably carries with it a very negative meaning, but its original usage is a positive one. Dancheong 단청 is one of the most easily recognizable pattern used on buildings in Korea and I will talk about it in relation with temples. Finally, I’ll talk about the monster masks (귀면) that are found both inside and outside Korean temples. I will make a second video on this subject so stay tuned.
