It's an instrument with a lot of wine glasses, we have almost 60 glasses here and this is very rare instrument today. Mid duo playing LEAD IN : Music lovers in Klaipeda, Lithuania packed out the local concert hall this week to hear a glass harp concert by Anna and Arkadiusz Szafraniec. Most of the audience knew the music they were playing, but few had ever hear of a glass harp. The duo from Poland are two of the few musicians in Europe who play an instrument which dates back to the Middle Ages but was forgotten for several centuries. STORYLINE: When they lift the cover off their instrument, you understand why they call themselves the "glass duo". And when you hear the music they create, you understand why the glass harp is often called "the angelic organ". Classically trained musicians Anna and Arkadiusz Szafraniec used to play violin and trumpet in the Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra in Gdansk, Poland. But several years ago they started to experiment with glass cups. They were so impressed and inspired by the sounds which came from running their fingertips over the rims of the glasses that they quit the orchestra and formed "the glass duo". Today they perform both solo concerts and concerts accompanied by musicians. They have had several musical works composed especially for them. Their instrument is packed into two cases. One case forms the base on top of which sits a stand with 57 wine glasses of different sizes. The high content of lead in the glasses was also a health concern.
