The scariest most bone chilling non-atonal piano piece I’ve heard. The theme is very simple, a C-Flat/A flat Minor key, repeating gloomy E flat chords, and single notes in the treble, which the motifs repeat. This piece title is perfect and it sounds exactly like a Mad Woman on the Seashore, all alone which nobody to help her. To me this piece embodies mental illness very unsettlingly, which makes it so scary as it can resonate with people. The climax is where the ill woman has an episode and everything quites down and comes to a complete stop. It is up the listener to interpret her fate. This piece is not very technically difficult but conveying the emotion and darkness is super challenging, and Jens Hagen Wegner does it spendidly, making this my favourite performance. I do really like how he composed an extra flurry of notes in the beginning and the ending, the ending using the main theme. Both are so pleasant to listen to, however I feel like it takes away from the piece, most notably the arpeggios at the end which sound like Chopin’s Ocean etude. It sounds inappropriate to include it after the soft ending that Alkan intended, which makes the interpretation more effective in conveying the message. However, it does not make me admire less the way he played the whole piece. Thank you very much for @Katrmior for suggesting this. Recording used: • Alkan - La Chanson De La Folle Au Bord De...
