The Global Montessori Network This video lesson, 4th in the series of mystery bag activity is designed for 3-5 years for children to promote the development of the stereognostic sense at an early age. In Montessori education, children use their senses to study the environment. With the help of sensorial activities, children absorb and learn information that helps them classify their surrounding environment. It is essential to create an environment where children can learn with multiple senses to keep them engaged and retain information. What is stereognostic sense? Stereognosis is the ability to perceive and recognize the characteristics of any object and identify them without seeing, smelling, tasting, or hearing. What is a stereognostic bag? The stereognostic bag is also called the mystery bag. The purpose of the mystery bag activity is to help children visually recognize objects with their sense of touch. Materials Required for the Mystery Bag Activity – A non-transparent cloth bag – Five or more objects of different characteristics How to introduce the activity to the child? This Mystery Bag activity is performed by placing a few objects in a cloth bag and then asking the child to feel and identify the objects using their hands. Follow the steps as shown in video: 1. Place all the objects on the table and name them one by one. 2. Ask the child to touch each object and put them inside the bag. 3. Ask the child to put their hand in the bag and hold an object 4. Ask them to feel its shape and other characteristics and identify the object 5. Ask them to describe all the characteristics perceived and name which object they are holding. 6.
