With a perfect location to begin research regarding Ultracite (AMS utilized atomic charges to drill and mine extremely far into the ground), Enclave engineers and scientists got to work almost immediately constructing the facility that would eventually be called the Gleaming Depths. A shoot on sight order was given to personnel due to the utmost secrecy of the project. Doctor Robert Gaines was assigned to be the directing scientist of the project, though he did not have control over what his orders were and the facility itself, those being relegated to Enclave brass. Initially, he was merely experimenting more generally on Ultracite, however during one of these experiments, Dr. Gaines realized that when bombarded with sound waves, Ultracite crystals would generate a sort of invincible force-field, referred to as Ultragenetic Resonance. Immediately recognizing the value of this discovery, the Enclave ordered this to be the main course of experimentation the project would be devoted to. Breakthrough after breakthrough regarding the crystal's unique property was made. First, after an issue with an unauthorized civilian at the facility's entrance, an Ultragenetic shield was fitted to an oversized Sentry bot torso, and emplaced in a position that made encountering it, and inevitably being cut down by it, an impossibility to avoid. This bot would be known as the EN06 Guardian, the first boss of the Raid. Experiments with animals had been occurring throughout, creating invincible Ultragenetic creatures that could range from a lowly Mole rat to a Deathclaw, as seen in the fourth stage of the raid. At some point, the command center (third stage area) had three Ultragenetic generators fitted within it that could allow power-armored soldiers stationed there to benefit from the effects of Ultragenesis and become essentially invincible security forces, powerful enough that any three soldiers present could all be supplied invulnerability by one generator, even if on the cusp of breaking. It is not known if these generators and the three troop pods in the room were installed before or after Enclave Squad Epsilon was called in to the facility when it was put on lockdown, though these are the soldiers, now Scorched, presently utilizing the system when encountered in the raid. One fatal flaw with Ultragenesis became clear to Dr. Gaines: Under the right conditions of damage, Ultracite crystals would shatter violently and release a burst of energy. This small meltdown was very damaging to things affected by Ultragenesis, though would not remove the effect. In spite of his successful research and his claim that he believed he was doing right by the future of mankind, Dr. Robert Gaines was viciously mauled and killed by his pet garter snake, Butch, that he had been conducting experiments on during a routine sound wave bombardment of an ultracite crystal, which apparently enraged the creature. More and more continued to go wrong, and eventually the facility was placed on lockdown. According to a holotape left by Captain John Holloway, the same man who documented the death of Dr. Gaines, something known as the "fear" had begun taking hold in personnel at the facility during the lockdown. What exactly this "fear" was is entirely unknown, though based on the state of the Epsilon Squad, it could perhaps be the Scorched Plague, as by then the world had ended and other Enclave experiments had brought about the Scorchbeasts.
