This knife, the Mtech MT-151 is a clone of the Cold Steel Trailmaster, ironically it has the same problems as that knife which I owned in Carbon V : -grip wears smooth and becomes slick -lanyard tub will loosen -grip will star to separate from the tang In regards to the steel, 440A has a maximum hardness of 59/60 HRC, without oil and deep cryo and a high austenization you will lose 1-2 points for each of those three and thus 440A is typically found at 54/56 HRC. In regards to popular steels, this can be thought of as a wear resistance upgrade to 12C27M with similar ability to harden (one HRC point behind with similar heat treatment) and a light improvement in corrosion resistance. This steel does not have the high carbide volumes of steels like ATS-34, VG-10, N690, etc. , but for general wood work carbide volume has no benefit as edges dull by rolling/chipping and this steel will be much easier to regrind to remove any damage. This knife has a custom reground edge bevel which does increase the edge retention as it lowers the strain on the edge, but even with the NIB edge profile it takes a fair amount of wood chopping to remove the ability to slice paper. The only caveat about this knife is that since it is so inexpensive the QC is likely non-existent and thus the knife you get could be very different from the one I get. I would in particular check the edge bevels as if the primary grind is too deep it may leave the edge a bit too thin. For chopping in soft-moderate woods, the edge should be 0.020"-0.025" with a skilled/experienced user.
