FROM THE EUROPEAN ARCHIVES: Journalist and photographer Sascha Jussen lives near Neuss in Germany and over twenty years ago he filmed a lot of the tractors and machinery at work in his area and further afield, including in Belgium and the Netherlands. Back then he had a Sony MiniDVD camera which means that the footage is not HD and lacks definition but we feel that the action he caught is so fascinating that for a few years now we have been adding scenes to our channel. Is it just us or is sugar beet harvesting more interesting with two or three stage machines, like in the old days! In Europe something like the old systems is still used, as can be seen here when Sascha caught this Fendt 820 working with a six-row front mounted topper and a rear mounted lifter that leaves the roots on the surface, ready for a massive Gilles RB 240T self-propelled tanker loader to collect them into its cavernous hopper. The Fendt has plenty of power thanks to its 200hp and the Vario CVT transmission makes driving easy while the operator of the Gilles has a comfortable Claas Vista cab to spend the working day in. At first glance the roots look more like parsnips than sugar beet but the leaves certainly look like sugar beet!
