In 1993 Patrick Evenepoel, father of Remco Evenepoel, took the win in the GP de Wallonie (Belgium) at the age of 24. It was one of the biggest victories of his professional career. He escaped the leading group on the penultimate climb of the Citadel of Namur and kept his advantage until the finish. One week before he had finished the Vuelta a España for the Collstrop-Assur Carpets team. During those 3 weeks he had been assisting his teammate Hendrick Redant, who won the general sprinters classification. After a week of relative rest, Evenepoel used his body’s supercompensation to take the win in the GP de Wallonie. If you watch this video, you will experience his power, panache and souplesse. The same characteristics you may see when watching his son, Remco Evenepoel, race. Can he one day take the win in the GP de Wallonie? Can he survive the attacks on the Citadel of Namur? And, can he arrive alone, with a 1-minute gap? At first, bearing in mind the latest results of Remco, we have to say yes, he can. Power, endurance, climbing skills, … all the ingredients are there to copy his dad’s win. But who will he be competing with? At what moment in his career will he participate? And will others focus on him even more during this race? Making predictions is a tricky thing, we’ll have to wait and see. GP de Wallonie 1993 | 190km | 4h53min 1. Patrick Evenepoel 2. Raymond Maijs @ 1min 1s 3. Mario de Clercq @1min 7s The Grand Prix de Wallonie is a single-day professional bicycle race held in Wallonia (the southern, French-speaking part of Belgium). Run since 1935, the race has a semi-classic status and is generally held in September. Before 2003, the GP de Wallonie was run in May. The race was not run between 1940-41, 1945-48 and 1951-69. Two riders have won the GP de Wallonie three times, Adolf Braeckveldt and Nick Nuyens. With a finish at the Citadel of Namur, the race is well-suited to riders with a good finishing punch like Philippe Gilbert (who has won it twice), Patrick Evenepoel or Remco Evenepoel.
