Egyptian hand knotted wool Cairene carpets are believed to have been woven in or near Cairo from at least as early as the 15th century to the 18th Century. The Ottoman Empire conquest resulted in a variety of transitional designs and ultimately in a large production of floral design carpets in the Ottoman manner, many with systems of circular Grand medallions. This example dates back to mid 16th Century with typically soft wool very susceptible to wear and has therefore been heavily worn. The process of dusting and hand washing the rug softens the wool foundation/weave structure making it ready for re-piling and repair. This is one of the videos reflecting the conservation process of this grand carpet, which required creative and skilled expertise ensuring that all colors, age, patterns, and textures associated with this carpet are reimposed in accordance with its original style.
