Exploring Sanchi Stupa (Part 1 of 3) | The Great Stupa, Ashoka & Early Buddhist History. This film marks the beginning of a detailed heritage walk through the Sanchi Stupa World Heritage Site, guided by an archaeologist. In Part 1, we explore the Great Stupa at ground level, tracing its origins, historical significance, and the early symbols of Buddhism carved into its stone. Built under the patronage of Emperor Ashoka, the Great Stupa at Sanchi stands as one of the oldest surviving stone structures in India. As we walk around the stupa, we discuss its architectural form, the meaning of its railings and gateways, and the symbolic representation of Gautam Buddha in early Buddhist art — long before anthropomorphic idols became common. This episode introduces the spiritual, historical, and artistic foundations of Sanchi, setting the context for deeper exploration in the episodes that follow. Coming up in this series: ▶️ Part 2: Exploring the upper terraces of the Great Stupa, detailed Buddhist artwork, and structures within the complex, including Temple No. 17, one of India’s oldest built temples. ▶️ Part 3: A walk through the Vihara site at Sanchi, exploring monastic life, temples, and intriguing carvings — including lesser-known symbolic and narrative elements. This heritage series documents the archaeology, art, and living legacy of Buddhism in India, with a focus on the Sanchi–Bhopal region of Madhya Pradesh.
