Follow the #SBbirth story: http://sunnybrook.ca/sbbirth Dr. Jon Barrett: “Skin to skin contact in vaginal birth is now well established in improving many, many outcomes for the baby and the mother. It improves the baby’s temperature regulation, it improves the baby’s chance of getting jaundice, it improves breastfeeding, it improves contact between the mother and baby. It’s been shown to even improve post-natal depression.” (Graphics) Skin-to-skin is the standard after vaginal births. But 20-30% of births are now C-sections. “What we’ve done at Sunnybrook is devised a method – and it’s not a new method as it’s been studied and performed in other countries – but brought that procedure to Canada and we performed skin-to-skin C-section some time ago now and now it’s being offered routinely to patients in whom it’s applicable, it’s not applicable to everybody, and who are desirous of this method of delivery. Twins are kind of a unique situation because there is only room for one baby on the mother’s chest during the C-section so the father has to be game and willing to accommodate. The issue is the warmth and the contact the baby has with another person’s skin. People who are in the room, and me personally, it just feels not like surgery anymore. It feels more like the natural process and I believe that’s what the studies are showing, why the outcomes are different.”
