What is the ideal form of government according to the Bible? This is a controversial question. I’ve heard answers ranging from republicanism to anarchism. Amidst this confusion, who's right? I'm convinced that God prefers monarchy as opposed to any other form of government. This is the Biblical Case for Monarchy. We proclaim “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth (Lord of Hosts)” during the Anaphora in the Divine Liturgy. Interestingly, the High Place behind the altar has a throne for the bishop (who is an icon of Christ the High Priest) often surrounded by other chairs for his co-celebrants. This is an image of the divine council. [2] See Psalm 148:2; 1 Kings 22:19; Daniel 7:9-10; Revelation 5:11-12 [3] See Psalm 82; Psalm 89:5-7; Job 1:6-12; Job 2:1-6; 1 Kings 22:19-23; Luke 20:36, Galatians 3:26. Note: Of course, by “gods,” the Bible isn’t suggesting that any of these beings are equivalent to the Most High God who alone is uncreated. Furthermore, by “sons of God,” the Bible isn’t saying that these beings are like Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of the Father. Jesus Christ is unique in that He was begotten of God the Father before all ages, whereas these “sons of god” are created. Our God is uncreated, unique among the gods. [4] See Genesis 14:18-22; Numbers 24:16; Psalms 57:2; 78:35; 7:10; 50:14; 73:11; 107:11; 78:56; 46:4; 2 Samuel 23:1; Hosea 11:7; Isaiah 14:13-14; Daniel 3:26; 4:2; 5:18; 5:21; Mark 5:7; Luke 1:32; 1:35; 8:28; Acts 16:17; Hebrews 7:1; Note: The Most High God is basically equivalent to Lord of Hosts, which is found in Isaiah 6:1-4. I would argue that heresy is far worse than political tyranny. Tyrants can kill the body, but heresy can kill the soul (see Matthew 10:28). The iconostasis always has the Theotokos on His right and St. John the Baptist on His left. This is also why Christ could not give these positions to the apostles James and John when they asked to sit at Christ’s right and left (see Mark 10:35-40).
