(1 Jun 1998) Spanish/Nat Car accidents and general traffic chaos in El Salvador's capital have reached a crisis point. The city's roads were designed more than 50 years ago for 60-thousand cars - there are now more than half a million cars on the roads each day. Authorities have begun a 2 billion (U-S) dollar plan to remodel the capital city's road infrastructure. Day after day the people of El Salvador use roads jammed with heavy traffic. Salvadoreans are using a road structure designed more than 50 years ago for 60-thousand cars. But today half a million cars circulate in the capital city - San Salvador - the worst example of this problem. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "This is a national problem. Wherever you go there is a traffic jam because we need more alternative roads." SUPER CAPTION: Manuel Ruiz, Taxi driver San Salvador is considered the second most dangerous Latin American city to drive in after Bogota, Colombia. Main roads within the city are the most dangerous as there are very few pedestrian crossings. Traffic jams are a regular problem. Careless driving and a lack of awareness about pedestrians also adds to the high fatalities. According to figures released by the Red Cross, 412 people died in car accidents last year. But statistics from the Legal Medical Institute show that careless driving is not the main cause of the accidents. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Unfortunately, 80 per cent of vehicle accidents in El Salvador can be attributed to, amongst other things, the excessive use of alcohol and drugs." SUPER CAPTION: Juan Mateo Llort, Chief of antidoping Unit A study to measure the effects of traffic and pinpoint the necessary solutions is imperative. A 2 billion U-S dollar project has been launched by authorities to tackle the problem. The construction of a ring road around the city centre, and the widening of existing roads and bridges are high on the agenda.
