The Biswa Ijtema, one of the world’s largest peaceful Islamic congregations, began today in Hooghly district. The gathering is estimated to draw between 5 and 10 million participants from across the globe. This year, the Biswa Ijtema is being held at Puinan in Dadpur, Hooghly, West Bengal. The last Biswa Ijtema in the region was organised in 1992 in the Howrah–Nibra area. After a gap of 33 years, the major spiritual congregation has returned to Hooghly district. The event is organised by the Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic movement focused on spiritual renewal and the preaching of Islamic values. The congregation emphasises prayers, unity, and guidance from the Quran and Hadith. Muslims from various countries gather to strengthen their faith, promote peace, and pray for the welfare of humanity in an atmosphere of brotherhood and devotion. The Biswa Ijtema will continue from 2 January and conclude on 5 January. The organisers are expecting a footfall of around one crore devotees. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has directed the administration to ensure peaceful, safe, and well-organised arrangements, including security, sanitation, traffic regulation, water supply, healthcare, and crowd management. Hooghly Rural Police District DSP (D&T) Priyabrata Bakshi said that extensive police deployment has been made for crowd control and to maintain law and order. Police personnel have been stationed at major railway stations, including Dhaniakhali, Belmundi, and Shivaichandi. Eight locations along the Durgapur Expressway service roads have been earmarked for vehicle parking. Under the police station areas of Dadpur, Singur, Tarkeswar, Pandua, Haripal, and Dhaniakhali, 30 road junctions have been declared no-entry zones. However, alternative route maps have been prepared to ensure smooth movement of regular traffic. Dhaniakhali MLA Ashima Patra said that the administration is on high alert and fully prepared to provide all basic civic amenities to the devotees.
