The Parker Wind Ensemble performing Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral by Richard Wagner, arranged by Lucien Cailliet. May 11, 2009. The video you see was projected onto the walls of the auditorium during the performance. From the program insert: "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral comes from the opera Lohengrin by Richard Wagner, and was first performed in Germany in 1848. It is the story of the mystic Knight of the Holy grail, Lohengrin, who comes to defend the people of Antwerp from invaders and save the beautiful young Princess from false accusations. His only requirement for help is that no one asks who he is or where he is from. As with many of Wagner's operas, the ultimate outcome of the story is a tragic one of deceit, lust for power, and betrayal. This music however comes from the high point in the opera as the princess Elsa and her entourage travel to the great Cathedral for her marriage to the heroic Knight. This difficult transcription of the choral/orchestra music was written for band in 1938 by Lucien Cailliet and has been an important part of band repertoire ever since. It is on many Class "A" performance lists." Images used for non-profit, no copyright infringement intended.
