Koffi Olomidé (born July 13, 1956) is a legendary Congolese singer, songwriter, and producer who has dominated African music for over four decades. Known as the "King of Ndombolo" and "Grand Mopao," he is the founder of the influential band Quartier Latin International. Early Life and Education Birth: Born Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba in Kisangani (then Stanleyville), Belgian Congo. Family: His father was Congolese and his mother was of Congolese and Sierra Leonean descent. Education: A standout student, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Economics from the University of Bordeaux (1981) and reportedly a Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Paris. Musical Career Early Success: In the 1970s, he worked with Papa Wemba and the band Viva La Musica. Initially a songwriter, he was nicknamed "the most famous student in Zaire" for his early hits. Genre Innovation: He pioneered Tcha Tcho, a slower, more sensuous variation of soukous focusing on romance. Quartier Latin: Founded in 1986. Milestones: In 2000, he was the first African solo artist to sell out the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy (now Accor Arena). His 1992 album Haut de Gamme is featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. On June 10, 2025, he was awarded the title of Full Member of SACEM in Paris. Légende Ed. Diamond (2022): Blends Congolese rumba with modern hip-hop and trap. Platinum (2024): A 43-track album featuring international guest artists. GOAT Intemporel, Vol. 1 (2025): Released on May 9, 2025, this album features reinterpretations of his classic hits. Controversies Despite his success, Olomidé's career has been marked by legal troubles: Assault Convictions: He received suspended sentences for assaulting a producer in 2012 and was deported from Kenya in 2016 for kicking a dancer at the airport. Statutory Rape: In 2019, a French court found him guilty of statutory rape involving a former dancer; he received a two-year suspended jail sentence in absentia.
