TRRS 498: CSX Trains: 4-Way Railroad Crossing in the Snow

04 Jan 2017 - Grand Rapids, MI Late afternoon on an early January day in West Michigan was typical on the 4th day of 2017, with lake effect snow showers ensuring a rough commute and adding a scenic touch to two CSX trains on the east side of Grand Rapids. At Elliot and Silver Street, the roads meet each other as well as cross the CSX Grand Rapids Terminal Subdivision, leading to this unique arrangement with four full light and gate assemblies which close off the intersection at train time. First up between snow squalls is Y106, a local who has just wrapped up their day's customer services and is heading back for home at Wyoming Yard. With a newly rebuild GP38-3 leading, they've got a few cars of mixed freight and a balance of empty propane tanks from Alto Gas, one of the region's most lucrative customers for the railroad. Just to the west, Y106 would meet K862, a loaded potash train bound for the Webberville Elevator a couple hours east of Grand Rapids. Potash is a mineral product which is spread on farm fields as fertilizer, and is hauled to Webberville in a few trains annually. The trains originate somewhere out west, hence the foreign leader taking them upgrade, out of the Grand River valley. For K862, the snow picked up quite a bit, ensuring a great scene on an otherwise dreary Michigan Winter's Day.
