Race 1 - 00:00 Race 2 - 23:15 Today was the first weekend of a new season of Phoenix World Championship. Again we are in the URD T5 cars, which are analogues for the real 2018 DTM cars. I've teamed up with PhotonBurst again to make up the Timberwolves Racing team, and we have a cool new livery to boot. The race itself took place at an extremely cold and extremely windy and extremely bumpy Zolder. I managed to place P1 in both races, although definitely with thanks to a lot of luck. The new format featured a 20 minute sprint race which had an attached qualifying session, and then the results of that would determine the grip for a 40 minute feature race. I hadn't done quite as much testing as Photon did this weekend, with him easily a few tenths ahead of me through the week. I knew that there wasn't a whole lot I could do with the time I had, so I was tentatively expecting a DRS-assisted chase, and some points from finishing second. However, this little work I had done went out the window when I loaded onto the practice server and discovered that the simulated in-game 40 kph wind (that was drawn from the real-life weather forecast) was actually set in exactly the opposite direction that I had practiced with. As a result, all my braking points changed about 50 meters, and the sectors of the track where I had painstakingly crafted the setup of the car to be right on the edge of grip were now undrivable with the wind blowing my car off balance. It also seemed that everyone else, including Photon, had practiced with the wind blowing in the "correct" direction, and had all made their setups accordingly. I was pretty shocked, but resigned myself right away to quick-fix as many setup issues as I could in the 40 minute run-up to the race. I though I'd at least be able keep the car on track--nevermind the pace--and hold onto the points that I could. Suddenly, as we loaded onto the qualifying and race session, there was another shock as everyone discovered the wind was now coded to be 180 degrees from the direction that it was from in the practice session. The configuration for the server was the same, with the only plausible explanation being the notorious Kunos-Simulazioni quality assurance team letting another one slip past them. Now having the "correct" setup and braking points for the current wind conditions compared to everyone else, qualifying was a blowout with everyone struggling with the wind blowing their car off the track in the same way I did in practice. I then pushed but played it safe in both the races to claim what appeared to other people as a straightforward weekend. Photon was even back on the pace in the second race, and I had to undercut him in the pitstop to get a gap to him. If I was in Photon's position, I'd be pretty ticked off. But he did an great job anyway considering the circumstances. I'm really grateful for the result, but that was too close of a call to a terrible weekend, and I definitely would call this an extremely lucky one for sure. Not that I didn't shake my fist in victory after crossing the line :) It was great, though, to see many new drivers in the series. Hopefully they all stick around, as they definitely had some great pace. Thanks again to Phoenix Racing Club for having this event and running the series, and thanks everyone for racing!
