From late September to mid October 2024, a long period comet became visible from Earth. On September 27, 2024, the comet designated C/2023 A3 "Tsuchinshan ATLAS" reached perihelion (its closest approach to the sun) at 0.391 AU (astronomical units). The comet briefly reached an apparent magnitude of -4.9, (similar to planet Venus). By the time it was visible in the evening sky of Oklahoma on October 12, its magnitude dropped to about -1.5, but this still rivaled the brightness of comet Neowise in 2020. Over the next few days, I photographed the comet from multiple locations across central Oklahoma. The comet was visible to the naked eye in areas of low light pollution, but longer camera exposures, as usual, brought out far more detail. The time lapses are each constructed from a series of individual photographs that were strung together. A total of over 1,500 individual photographs were used to create all 4 time lapses seen in this video. Hope you enjoy! Soundtrack: Feels by Patrick Patrikios
