Haunted not only by its dark history and connection to the infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper, the Ten Bells in East London is well-known as one of the most haunted pubs in the city. Visitors and staff have reported a host of chilling encounters, including sightings of a man dressed in dark Victorian clothing, a dishevelled woman seen lingering in the bar, the echoes of a crying child, a sobbing woman, ghostly footsteps… and terrifying outbursts of evil laughter. Who are these spirits, and what stories of life and loss might they carry? Nestled in the heart of Whitechapel, the historic Ten Bells remains steeped in the atmosphere and character of Victorian London. Its beautifully tiled walls seem to cling on to the memories of Elizabeth Stride, Annie Chapman and Mary-Jane Kelly – the three unfortunate women who met friends and socialised there until, in 1888, their lives were brutally cut short by the evil Jack the Ripper. Mary-Jane spent her final evening at the Ten Bells, and it was the last place Annie was ever seen alive. Many are convinced that the ghostly form of a shabbily dressed woman seen by many in the bar is one of these tragic women. Join me for this episode of Ghostly Postcodes, when we explore the incredible Ten Bells, the lives of the three women linked to the Ten Bells, the harsh reality of life in Victorian Whitechapel, and the ghostly legends that refuse to fade. Who are these spirits, and why might they remain tied to this iconic East London pub?
