Norfolk Southern's Port Road Branch, formerly the PRR Columbia & Port Deposit Branch, is a piece of railroad that runs from the east end of Enola Yard to Perryville, MD, at the wye onto Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Following along the banks of the Susquehanna River, the formerly electrified Port Road sees NS traffic going to both Delaware and Baltimore, MD, with a lot of loaded coal trains and empty coal hoppers heading to and from consol. Most moves are normally nocturnal, due to a slowdown in Amtrak trains due to the coronavirus, the Port Road has been seeing some daylight traffic, for now.... My first visit out for some daylight coal was February 14th, my buddy Chris and I hiked to Williams Tunnel in beautiful Peach Bottom, PA, one of three tunnels within a few miles of each other, this one being the only one in Pennsylvania. NS 633, an empty coal train from Baltimore for Keating, PA is seen cruising from the natural bore tunnel with AC44C6M 4066 and a Dash 9 for power. The train is seen skirting along the river and the twists and turns of the line, passing a few chopped catenary poles as well.. Next was Sunday March 21st, with four daylight trains on tap and a beautiful day, we head to the Port Road again. Little did we know, every train we'd see this day would sport an EMD leader. First up, NS Y91, an empty coal train, is seen skirting the river behind SD70ACe 1191 and a D9. Not long after, NS 36A rounds the curve into town heading for Edgemoore, DE. A big mixed freight was in tow, with SD70ACe 1143 and D9 9454 leading the way, and AC44C6M 4210 in the middle. Later, we hiked to Williams Tunnel for another empty coal, Y93, with another SD70AC/D9-44CW pair, 1166 and 9488. Finally, a 595 showed up to close the day, with another empty coal train, this one being led by SD70ACC 1843 and D9-44CW 9900. With that, we headed home... Thanks for watching!
